Department of Community Medicine

 
  PARAS (Prevention, Advocacy, Research, Alliance and Support)  project :

PARAS was launched in 1996 for HIV/AIDS.  Departmental activities under PARAS includes TI project of FSWs, Trainings, Infection Surveillance, community education and higher level supportive counselling.

          National Blindness Control program (NPCB):

Under National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPCB) a Sentinel Surveillance Unit (SSU) is operational under the joint collaboration of the Department of Community Medicine and department of Ophthalmology, Government Medical College, Surat. Basic function of the SSU is to monitor ophthalmic morbidity and cataract surgery as well as the visual outcome post surgery.

  Leptospirosis prevention and control activities:

Department acts as the nodal agency in Leptospirosis prevention and control activities and do daily reporting of Leptospirosis cases to RDD office Surat.

  State IDD laboratory:

There is a state IDD laboratory in the Department of Community Medicine, Government Medical College, Surat, which has been developed under the Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control Program (IDDCP) of Government of India and is functional since 2000. Objective of this laboratory is to monitor Iodine Deficiency Disorders in the state. Iodine estimation in the Urine samples and salt samples are done in this laboratory.

          Disaster Management and Epidemic Control activities:

Role of the department is in Planning, Monitoring and Coordination of these activities.

          IDSP (Integrated Disease Surveillance Project):

Department of Community Medicine, Government Medical College, Surat has been identified as a Nodal Department for data collection, compilation & uploading to GSWAN for all seven functional units of IDSP under New Civil Hospital Surat since February 2010.  Every Monday by 11 AM, Data Entry operator cum clerk from the department of  PSM  collect the reports from the respective reporting units in Format of  Forms P & Form L (as applicable for respective unit) , so that it can be uploaded by noon.

             IMNCI (Integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood Illness):

Dept acts as a nodal centre for IMNC. Trainings for Basic IMNCI, Facility Based IMNCI (F-IMNCI), Supervisory IMNCI (Follow-up IMNCI) and Pre-service IMNCI (Students IMNCI) are done in the department. Evaluation and Monitoring for IMNCI is also carried out.

Prevalence of ESBL, ß lactamase responsible for HAI in our hospital.
 
Department of Ophthalmology

Sentinel surveillance of Ocular morbidity and cataract surgery under NPCB, funded by Central govt. of India.
Other clinical research done in department in form of dissertations . Presently such five research work going on topics like abnormal Disc presentations in fundus, Ocular injuries, Ultrasound biomicroscopy, Study of HIV positive patients who are on ART.etc.

Faimer (Philadelphia) project on “Modified independent learning in Medical undergraduates” BY Dr. Priti Kapadia

Other clinical research done in department in form of dissertations.

 Presently Ongoing studies like  UBM in corneal blindness,   Study of HIV /AIDS patients having ophthalmic manifestations,  Disc changes in glaucoma and its correlation with different objective examination,   Comparision of different advanced tonometers with applanation tonometry,  A scan and IOL power calculation in higher refractive errors. Etc.
